This year’s festival prologue will take place beyond the Czech borders, in Cremona, Italy. This exceptional event will mark the start of a collaboration with the esteemed Foundation and Academia Walter Stauffer, based in this renowned Lombard city associated with the art of violin making. Through a recently signed memorandum, the two institutions have affirmed their partnership as a strategic step aligned with their shared mission to create professional opportunities for young musicians. On Thursday, 16th April 2026 at 6 pm, the Museo Civico “Ala Ponzone” in Cremona will host three outstanding up-and-coming quartets: the Arola Quartet and Quartetto di Genova, nominated by the Stauffer Foundation, and the Suk Quartet, nominated by our festival.

BL!NDMAN plays BACH

Johann Sebastian Bach
Christ, der du bist der helle Tag, BWV 766
Ach, was soll ich Sünder, BWV 770
O Gott, du frommer Gott, BWV 767
Sei gegrüßet, Jesu gütig, BWV 768

In this programme, BL!NDMAN presents a special performance of the four Choralpartiten by J.S. Bach (1685-1750). Of these little-known organ works, Eric Sleichim made a transcription for saxophone quartet.
It is usually assumed that Bach wrote these organ works at the age of barely 15 and that he later reworked them, which seems to be confirmed by their perfection. The chorale partita is a cycle of variations using a simple sequence of different “adventures” around the same theme. In these works, however, it becomes clear with what great ingenuity Bach uses this “poor” technique. By assigning a distinct identity to each of the variations, he creates the impression that each piece can still exist as a fully-fledged independent piece at any time despite its uniform atmosphere. As such, through its variations, each chorale partita demonstrates Bach’s inventiveness and innovative take on the German polyphonic tradition.
With its modern instrumentation, the BL!NDMAN saxophone quartet gives a new shape to this authentic style. The extraordinary sound spectrum of the saxophones equally evokes the austere sounds of certain baroque organs. The choice of performance of the Choral Partitas by wind instruments therefore rests on the source of all music: the breath.

In Citizenship Notes, the string quartet is posited as a microcosmic democracy; a highly engaged ecosystem of equal voices with clear rights and responsibilities. It also celebrates a significant milestone in the history of Western democracy: the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Three new commissions, Byron Byron, Ted Hearne, and Angélica Négron, explore questions of citizenship and democracy in the 21st century, while BR’s own Colin Jacobsen puts his unique spin on the Bob Dylan civil rights era classic. representation of a musical democracy.

Programme:
Hugo Wolf: Italian Serenade for String Quartet in G major
Maurice Ravel: String Quartet in F major
Giuseppe Verdi: String Quartet in E minor

Since its inception in the year 2000, Quartetto di Cremona has built a reputation as an accomplished and avant-garde chamber ensemble. Our Festival is also proud to point out the fact that the quartet’s viola player – Simone Gramaglia – is among the dramaturges of this year’s edition. The dramaturgic experience is also interwoven in the concert’s programme: Hugo Wolf’s one-movement Italian Serenade will ease us into the performance, followed by Ravel’s impressionistically rich String Quartet, and marking the end of a vibrant music journey is Giuseppe Verdi’s only purely instrumental work, widely regarded as the vivid embodiment of Italian musical spirit.

Concert of the Participants of the String Quartet Masterclasses

Arola Quartet (CH)
Quartetto di Genova (IT)
Kubita Quartet (CZ)
Suk Quartet (CZ)

This performance of four up-and-coming quartets will draw a line to a number of masterclasses, that will take place on the days 16. – 18. 6. in the breathtaking town of Kroměříž. These masterclasses will be led by well-respected professors of chamber music – Petr Jarůšek, Pavel Nikl, and Simone Gramaglia.

The masterclasses and the subsequent concert are a fitting way to fulfil the memorandum of cooperation established between the festival Concentus Moraviae and the Stauffer Foundation. This foundation is based in Cremona, Italy, and is well-known for its prestigious academy, Accademia Stauffer, which is dedicated to teaching the mastery of string instruments. It also plays an important role in preserving the unique violin-making traditions, that made Cremona famous worldwide. As part of this collaboration, Kroměříž will welcome the Arola Quartet and the Quartetto di Genova from the Accademia Stauffer. Joining them in this unique project are two carefully selected quartets chosen by Concentus Moraviae: the Kubita Quartet and the Suk Quartet.

More detailed programme of the performance will be posted during April.

Concentus Moraviae is traditionally held in historically rich venues of Southern Moravia that are connected to the House of Liechtenstein, from the Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape to the town of Mikulov, and even including Moravský Krumlov. This year’s ceremonial finale, featuring the renowned soprano Simona Šaturová and the award-winning Zemlinsky Quartet, will take place in the town of Wilfersdorf, in the historic residence of the House of Liechtenstein. That, through its location and significance, naturally connects the Moravian and Lower Austrian cultural landscapes. We would be delighted to welcome Wilfersdorf to the family of festival towns!
