In search for Heaven

Tenor Martin Prokeš and bariton Marek Šulc are the core of Kchun. Starting from the human voice they are in search for Heaven. For their project Purgatio they work together with video artist Rudolf Živec. He makes sure it is a concert to be heard and to be seen. Starting from Dante‘s Divina Commedia they dive into a musical and pictural evocation of the idea of purgatoria, the notion of being cleansed to be admitted to Heaven, or not. Music from the Codex Las Huelgas, Jacopo da Bologna, Johannes de Florentia and other guides them on their spiritual search.

Magic for voice and electric guitar

Nora Fischer grew up with music by composers as Monteverdi, Purcell and Dowland. In Marnix Dorrestein she found the perfect partner in crime to translate this music for the listener in the 21th century. Together they made the album Hush on which they stripped their favorite music of the Renaissance and early Baroque to its bare essence. To award their creativity the recording won an Edison and the praise of a large audience. They do spread magic, without any question. “Hush, no more. Be silent, all.”

Georg Friedrich Händel: Alessandro Severo

An opera filled with intrigue and musical wonder

The Collegium Marianum and acclaimed director Deda Cristina Colonna join forces to stage Alessandro Severo, an opera by George Friedrich Händel composed in 1738. The opera is a so-called pasticcio work since the composer recycles the music of previous operas.  The libretto is based on the life of Severus Alexander, a Roman emperor from 222 to 235 AD. His reign was prosperous and he sought peace with the tribes coming from Germania but the opera focusses rather on the complex relationship with his wife and mother. A story of intrigue meets Händel’s musical mastermind. Staged in Valtice in one of the most extraordinary baroque theaters of Europe and with a top cast including Raffaele Pé and Hana Blažíková.

Organ Power

Bart Jacobs needs no introduction to any lover of organ music. This student of Reitze Smits completed his studies cum laude and in the meanwhile he is titular organist at the cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula in Brussels. He won prizes in no less than four international competitions and has been travelling all over the world as a soloist. This extraordinary musician will play on an instrument that’s just as unique: the organ of the church if The Assumption of Virgin Mary in Polná. Built by Johann David Sieber in 1708 it still sounds heavenly and full of power in 2020.

Gaelic Songs and Dances from the 17th and 18th century

Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien always manage to bring new life into a concert tradition. Their musical visit to Celtic lands, The High Road to Kilkenny, combines refined, ‘highbrow’ pieces along with an entertaining repertoire of songs in Gælic and dances from the Irish Baroque. This music bears in it the mark of an insular poetry and a turbulent history.  François Lazarevitch went back to original texts and collections of the 17th and 18th centuries to find lullabies, minstrel songs and hymns to nature of extreme beauty. Combined with his personal charm it guarantees an exceptional concert experience.

An enchanting ritual for the 21st Century

Two of Norway’s most prominent female folk musicians, Berit Opheim and Benedicte Maurseth, wrote together with awardwinning writers Bergsveinn Birgisson and Erlend O. Nødtvedt a new ballad called Tidekverv. With a mix of baroque music, folk and improvisation they thematically honour the longest and shortest days, and the days when day and night are the same length, namely the summer solstice, winter solstice, spring equinox and autumn equinox. It’s no coincidence that during Concentus Moraviae they play at midsummer. Do not miss this ritual for the 21th century!

Chit chat with the muses

Jean Rondeau and Thomas Dunford became known as so called Early Music Youngsters, the enfants terribles of the scene. Fact is that they tackle music by Marin Marais, Jean-Philippe Rameau, father and son Forqueray and many others with a freshness that makes one rediscover this music in an exciting manner. Their chit chat with the muses is never without a purpose and they always strive for excellence. Early music has rarely sounded so modern.

The Alehouse Sessions

„It’s just old pop music!“

The Alehouse Sessions, curated and devised by Bjarte Eike, is an ever changing and evolving insight into the music of the English 17th Century tavern. It gives audiences a window into this tumultuous period through Purcell overtures, English sea shanties, and Scandinavian folk songs thrown in for good measure. These sessions have already been hailed as irresistible, superb and fabulously unrestrained, and they have diverted away from the traditional concert model by creating the effect of a late night jam session. Using their own arrangement of the tunes, the musicians combine this unique format with humour, an unrivalled virtuosity and flare for improvisation. The Alehouse Boys are awaiting your company!

Early Pop Songs

Especially for Concentus Moraviae one of the Ladies of early music, Raquel Andueza joins forces with Pierre Pitzl and his Private Musicke to show the pop-song quality of early Italian and English 17th century songs. Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger, Tarquinio Merula, John Dowland, … they all are not only names from the past, but mainly composers of music that still speaks to us. With the heavenly voice of Raquel Andueza and a mixture of ukulele, banjo, theorbo and electric guitar the idea of „early music unplugged“ aims directly at your heart.
